Car glass breakage: It deserves your full attention!
Article revised on 12 November 2018
Did you know your windshield could save your life in an accident? In fact, automobile safety experts rank the windshield as the third most important safety component for cars and trucks, following seat belts and air bags.
How is a windshield useful?
The windshield helps reinforce the vehicle’s safety by:
- Keeping the passengers inside the vehicle in the event of impact
- Supporting the roof and preventing it from collapsing when the vehicle flips over
A chipped or cracked windshield reduces visibility and makes driving dangerous. This is all the more true in winter, when even the smallest crack expands with the difference in temperature between the inside and outside of the car. To maximize passenger protection, make sure to keep your windshield in good condition.
Do you have glass breakage coverage?
Comprehensive (also known as Section B3) insurance covers glass breakage. This coverage is typically included in auto insurance contracts. It covers expenses for vehicle repairs or the replacement of glass surfaces.
In most cases, the repair won’t impact your premium or your insurance file.
You have no deductibles to pay for a windshield repair. But if it needs to be replaced, you must pay the deductible.
What’s the difference between repair and replacement?
Specialists will assess if your windshield needs to be repaired or replaced depending on the breakage (chip, crack, etc.), the circumference and depth of the damage, and where the break is located on the glass.
Whenever possible, repair is the preferred option. Repair specialists will inject a clear resin into the damaged area. This will cause the windshield to regain its original rigidity and look.
Otherwise, your windshield must be replaced. The specialist will install a new windshield. Side and rear windows cannot be repaired and must be replaced.
Is there a chip in your windshield? Have it repaired as soon as possible! Your safety and that of your passengers depends on it.
