Health Tips for Halloween: Not Sugar Coated!

Witches, princesses and all sorts of little monsters will descend on our streets on Halloween night. Here are a few tips to make sure you have an enjoyable night… and maybe even extend Halloween for a few more days!
1. Halloween night: Safety is top priority
- To be visible at night, wear light-coloured costumes with reflective tape. Use a flashlight.
- Go with short costumes to avoid tripping.
- Avoid masks so you can hear and see properly.
- Visit one side of the street at a time and cross the street at intersections.
- Check the candy you receive before eating it.
2. How to limit the secondary effects of candy
- Treat candy like a dessert, not a snack. The saliva in your mouth during meals helps to eliminate and neutralize sugar.
- Brush your teeth right away after eating sugary foods.
- Don’t have a toothbrush handy? Rinse your mouth with water or milk, eat fibrous foods such as raw vegetables, or chew sugar-free gum.
- Avoid soft and sticky candy like caramel that stays stuck in your teeth.
3. The pumpkin is more than just decoration
Unfortunately, most people consider pumpkins to be mere decoration as opposed to food. Rather than disposing of pumpkins in the compost, use them in recipes for soups, muffins or cakes. It’s a win-win situation because pumpkins have hidden benefits. They are an excellent source of vitamin A, primarily as beta-carotene. They contain antioxidant properties and promote good vision.
You should also keep the seeds! Pumpkin seeds are a powerful diuretic and can provide relief for some disorders of the urinary system or prostate. For maximum benefit, they should be eaten raw or dried, rather than roasted.
