Cardiac coherence (CC) is a simple technique that allows you to regulate your breathing to release stress and anxiety.
Our natural tendency is to exhale faster than we inhale. But doing so is not necessarily to our advantage.
That’s because exhaling is associated with a feeling of relaxation, a slowing of the heart rate and other bodily functions.
Based on the principle that our heart and respiratory system share a self-regulating system, CC trains us to give both phases of respiration equal time. CC enables you to obtain all the benefits associated with exhaling.
People who practice this technique develop greater self control, are more efficient and are better able to manage tension in their relationships.
Would you like to give it a try?
Here’s what to do
- Breathe calmly (about six respirations per minute) at a rhythm in which your breaths in and out are of equal length.
- Imagine that you are breathing through your heart, by expanding your rib cage.
- Attain a feeling of well-being by visualizing a peaceful place or by going back in your mind to a happy time.
- Do this exercise for five minutes, three times a day.
There’s an app for that!
In fact, there are a number of iPhone apps that can use visual and/or audio cues to help you regulate your breathing. Give it a try!
