What You Need to Know About Snowmobile Accidents
Article revised on 14 November 2018
More than 80,000 people drive snowmobiles or ATVs in Quebec. The snowmobile industry alone generates approximately $2 billion every year. It’s an industry that’s taking the province by storm! However, two thirds of fatal snowmobile accidents occur outside of marked trails.
Unfortunately, accidents do happen. This is exactly why the Act respecting off-highway vehicles states that all snowmobile or ATV owners must have civil liability insurance for at least $500,000. You must also pay annual registration fees for your snowmobile or ATV.
What are the registration fees for?
Registration fees are mandatory and are used to compensate victims from accidents occurring on public roads. Some of the money is used to fund financial aid programs for off-road vehicle clubs. Another part goes to developing and maintaining infrastructures for preserving wildlife.
Most people wrongly assume that registration fees cover injuries resulting from a snowmobile or ATV accident. Nothing could be further from the truth! The Automobile Insurance Act does not provide for any compensation when it comes to accidents involving these types of vehicles.
There is one exception: The SAAQ’s plan does provide payment if the accident occurs on a public road and involves a snowmobile or ATV AND an automobile. In such an event, you would have the same benefits as a passenger in an automobile.
Legal Access Insurance: a real asset in the event of an incident
Were you involved in a snowmobile or ATV accident that’s not covered by the SAAQ? To get compensated, you must take legal action against the person who caused the damage. You must also assume the costs – which are often through the roof – of taking legal action. Since Legal Access Insurance covers part of the professional fees charged by your lawyer, it’s a valuable asset to have in case of an accident. So why go on without it?
By being a safe and responsible driver, being a member of a club and taking out Legal Access Insurance, you can drive with peace of mind.
