Hurricanes and Trip Cancellation Insurance

Hurricanes and Trip Cancellation Insurance

Hurricanes have and are continuing to wreak havoc in the Caribbean and southern Florida, causing major woes for travellers. Have you already booked your trip, but a hurricane is threatening to affect the region you’re visiting? Here are a few things to keep in mind:

Trip cancellation prior to your departure

If you’re on the verge of leaving, you’ll be able to cancel your trip and benefit from coverages provided by your cancellation insurance under two conditions:

1. The Canadian government must have issued a notice to travellers stating that they should avoid making any non-essential trips to the region where you would be staying for the period covering the planned duration of the trip.

2. This notice must have been issued after you paid for your trip.

Trip interruption (at your destination)

Relaxing on the beach when you learn that a hurricane will hit the region you’re staying in? You’ll be able to interrupt your trip and benefit from coverages provided by your cancellation insurance under two conditions:

1. The Canadian government must have issued a notice to travellers stating that they should avoid making any non-essential trips to the region you’re staying in.

2. This notice must have been issued during your stay.

Reimbursement

In the event of cancellation or interruption, who should you contact for a reimbursement?à

1. First, contact your travel agency or airline company. Most airline companies refund or credit (usually valid for one year) the amount of your plane tickets.

2. If you own a credit card that includes trip cancellation insurance, you should contact the credit card company next. You could submit the portion that was not refunded by the travel agency or airline. You must have purchased your tickets with the credit card in question to be eligible.

3. If you aren’t eligible for a reimbursement or only get a partial refund from the above-mentioned organizations, your La Capitale trip cancellation insurance will cover the portion that is not reimbursed according to the terms set out in your contract.

IMPORTANT
If in the next few weeks or months you must go to a location hit by a natural disaster, the first thing you should do is contact your travel agency or airline company.
