Boston, New York and Washington are the most visited American cities by Quebec residents during the Easter holidays. We’d like to suggest three different destinations, located within a reasonable driving distance from Quebec, which you may enjoy discovering during the long weekend.
Founded in 1682, Philadelphia is the fifth largest city in the United States. History and architecture enthusiasts flock to this city to marvel at the stylish buildings from various periods (Georgian, Federal, neo-classic). You can also visit many historical sites such as the Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution were signed.
The are many museums waiting to be discovered (The Franklin Institute, Rodin Museum, National Constitution Center, Penn Museum, The Barnes Foundation), markets (Reading Terminal Market and South 9th Street Italian Market) and parks, too. Climb the stairs to the Philadelphia Museum of Art like Rocky Balboa and take a picture with his statue! And if you get hungry… you have to indulge in the famous Philly cheesesteak:Tony Luke’s, Pat’s King of Steaks and Geno’s Steaks are among the more well-known establishments. Philadelphia has plenty to offer in traditional restaurants, too, such as Vetri Cucina, Royal Boucherie, Suraya, Fork and Zahav.
Providence, Rhode Island
Rhode Island’s capital is one of the oldest cities in the US. Founded in 1636, Providence is located at the head of the Narragansett Bay. It is best known for its rich heritage and architecture. Ideally, you should discover the many charming neighbourhoods on foot (downtown, Federal Hill, College Hill, Fox Point).
As a university town, Providence is home to many celebrated campuses such as Brown University in College Hill. Visit Waterplace Park to get a spectacular view of the city. Then take a stroll on Riverwalk, a pedestrian walkway along the Woonasquatucket River, and head downtown for a beer in one of the city’s many microbreweries (Trinity Brewhouse, Union Station Brewery or Long Live Beerworks). Many of the best restaurants in the US are located in Providence, because the city is also home to one of the most famous culinary schools in the world, Johnson and Wales University.
A major port city, Baltimore is located at the junction of the Patapsco River and Chesapeake Bay. The heart of the city, known as the Inner Harbor, is where you can find many attractions such as the National Aquarium, one of the most beautiful aquariums in the US, but also the Maryland Science Center, Port Discovery Children’s Museum and Ripley’s Believe It or Not.
You should also make time in your schedule to visit the Edgar Allan Poe House and Museum, home of the famous American author and poet. He lived there in the 1830s. Another must-see location is the Babe Ruth Birthplace Museum, dedicated to the legendary American baseball player. Need one more reason to visit Baltimore during Easter? How about crab season, which kicks off in early April! Here are a few choice establishments where you can feast on crab: Locust Point Steamers, Faidley Seafood, Captain James Crab House and The Food Market for its crab cakes.
